How to Add an SR-22 to a Progressive Policy: Step-by-Step
Progressive is one of the few national carriers that files SR-22s in nearly every state that uses them. If you already have a Progressive policy, adding the filing is usually faster than shopping for a new company — but there are a few places drivers get stuck.
What an SR-22 actually is
An SR-22 is not insurance. It is a one-page certificate your insurance company sends to the state proving you carry at least the minimum liability limits. The state keeps it on file for the length of your order — typically three years — and suspends your license again the moment the filing lapses.
Step 1: Confirm the state and the reason
Call the DMV or read your suspension notice and confirm two things: which filing the state wants (SR-22 or, in Florida and Virginia, an FR-44 after a DUI) and the exact date the requirement starts. An FR-44 requires much higher liability limits — 100/300/50 — and Progressive prices it very differently from a standard SR-22.
Step 2: Ask Progressive to add the filing
You can request the filing by phone, through an independent agent, or in some states inside your online account. You will need your driver's license number and the case or citation number from the state notice. Progressive charges a one-time filing fee, usually about $25, on top of any rate change.
Step 3: Watch for the rate re-rate
Adding an SR-22 tells the carrier a violation exists. Progressive will re-run your motor vehicle report, and the premium normally changes at that point rather than at renewal. This is the moment to compare — a DUI or multiple violations can move a Progressive policy well above what a non-standard carrier would charge for the same coverage.
Step 4: Confirm the state received it
Most electronic filings post to the DMV within 24 to 72 hours. Do not assume it went through. Ask for confirmation, and check your state's driver record online before you drive.
Common reasons a Progressive SR-22 fails
If Progressive won't file — or the price jumps
That is the normal outcome after a DUI. We are an independent agency that writes SR-22 and FR-44 filings with multiple carriers, so we can compare the Progressive quote against companies that specialize in high-risk drivers and file the certificate the same day you bind.
