How the Texas SR-22 works
Texas SR-22 filings go directly to the Department of Public Safety in Austin. Unlike most states, the two-year clock runs from your conviction date rather than your reinstatement date, so drivers who spend months in suspension often finish the filing soon after getting their license back.
30/60/25 limits
Texas sets minimum liability at $30,000 / $60,000 / $25,000 — higher than Louisiana, Arizona, or Missouri. Every SR-22 policy written in Texas has to certify those limits, which is a large part of why Texas premiums sit above the regional average.
No FR-44 in Texas
Only Florida and Virginia use the FR-44. A Texas DWI conviction still uses a standard SR-22, but expect an ignition interlock order, DWI education, and a surcharge-free but expensive insurance market for the next several years.
Occupational (essential need) licenses
If your license is suspended, a Texas court can grant an occupational license for work, school, and household duties — up to 12 hours a day. The SR-22 must be on file with DPS before the order takes effect.
Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio rates
Harris and Dallas counties carry the highest SR-22 premiums in Texas, driven by claim frequency and uninsured-driver rates. San Antonio, Austin, and El Paso price meaningfully lower for the same driver profile, so comparing carriers matters more here than almost anywhere else.
Texas SR-22 FAQs
How long do I need an SR-22 in Texas?
Texas requires two years of continuous SR-22 coverage counted from the date of conviction. If your license was suspended for a while, the filing may end shortly after you get back on the road — but any lapse re-suspends you and extends the requirement.
What are the SR-22 liability limits in Texas?
Texas requires 30/60/25 — $30,000 bodily injury per person, $60,000 per accident, and $25,000 property damage. Texas does not use an FR-44, so DWI convictions use the same limits.
How much does SR-22 insurance cost in Texas?
Most Texas drivers pay $60–$155 per month for minimum-limit SR-22 coverage. Houston and Dallas run highest; West Texas and smaller metros run well below the state average. The SR-22 filing fee itself is usually $15–$25 one time.
Can I get a non-owner SR-22 in Texas?
Yes. Texas DPS accepts non-owner SR-22 filings when no vehicle is titled or registered to you. It satisfies the state at full 30/60/25 limits and typically costs far less than an owner policy.
Do I need an SR-22 for a Texas occupational license?
Yes. A Texas court will not grant an occupational (essential need) driver license until an SR-22 is on file with DPS and you carry the court order in the vehicle.
Does Texas require an ignition interlock after a DWI?
Texas courts order an interlock in most DWI cases and always for a BAC of 0.15 or higher or a repeat offense. The interlock is separate from — and in addition to — the SR-22 filing.
