Who needs an SR-22 in Arizona
The Arizona MVD orders an SR-22 filing after a DUI or extreme DUI conviction, driving on a suspended license, an at-fault accident while uninsured, an unsatisfied judgment from a crash, or accumulating enough points for a mandatory suspension. The SR-22 is not insurance — it is a certificate your insurer files proving you carry at least Arizona's minimum liability limits.
Arizona minimum liability limits
Since July 2020 Arizona requires 25/50/15 coverage. Your SR-22 policy must meet or exceed those limits for the entire filing period. If you carry lower limits at any point, the certificate is invalid.
Ignition interlock and DUI
Arizona is strict on impaired driving. A standard DUI, extreme DUI (.15 BAC or higher), or aggravated DUI carries jail time, fines, alcohol screening, and a certified ignition interlock device. The interlock requirement runs alongside, not instead of, the SR-22.
Keeping the filing active
Pay the policy annually or semi-annually if you can. Monthly plans are the most common cause of accidental lapse, and a single missed payment triggers an SR-26 to the MVD and an immediate suspension.
Arizona SR-22 FAQs
How long do I need an SR-22 in Arizona?
Arizona requires three continuous years of SR-22 filing measured from your reinstatement date. Any lapse restarts or extends the clock and re-suspends your license.
Does Arizona require an ignition interlock with an SR-22?
For DUI convictions, Arizona requires a certified ignition interlock device in addition to the SR-22. First-offense DUI typically carries a 12-month interlock requirement, which can be reduced with compliance.
Can I get an SR-22 in Arizona without owning a car?
Yes. A non-owner SR-22 policy satisfies the MVD filing requirement and covers you when driving vehicles you do not own. It is usually the cheapest way to keep a license valid.
What happens if my Arizona SR-22 policy lapses?
Your insurer must send an SR-26 cancellation notice to the MVD, and the MVD suspends your driving privilege immediately. You will pay reinstatement fees again and the three-year term restarts.
